Catalyst 3100 Switch

Definately a Retro project, this is a 10 MB/s catalyst switch base unit with an expansion module called a “Flex Slot” above. In fact this is so old that Cisco have a new Catalyst 3100 product (https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/switches/catalyst-ie3100-rugged-series/series.html), a rugged industrial style switch with 1GB/s SFPs fitted!! Wow!! From 1oMB/s to 1GB/s!

The base unit has the console serial port for setup, an AUI port which is shared with RJ45 E1, and another AUI labelled “SPAN”. Not sure what this does yet.

24 10MB/s ethernet ports are accessible on the front panel, there is an additional one which is hard wired through the backplane to the Flex Slot.

With Ethernet module

Just for fun, this is fitted with two fast ethernet fibre on ST connectors I think module:-

With Router Module

The switches I have are fitted with a router module, this is functionally the same as a 2500 router with two 60 pin sockets for the WAN, and an AUX serial connector. It also has an ISDN BRI socket.

Internally the ethernet0 interface is connected to the base unit backplane. The router serial console interface is accessed from the base unit console port with a command.
